GE F Automation
GE Fanuc Automation is preparing for the launch of CIMPLICITY® Version 7.0, the latest addition to our family of HMI/SCADA products. CIMPLICITY 7.0 will help you improve your business performance through powerful new features and increased integration with our Proficy family of products.
We have focused on improving security, disaster prevention and recovery, simplified project development, and improved connectivity to CNCs. With CIMPLICITY 7.0 your development costs will decrease and your day to day operational performance will improve.
One of the key ways CIMPLICITY can help you improve your business performance is through the integration with other products in the Proficy family. Unique to the industry, GE Fanuc has integrated its Change Management product with CIMPLICITY to provide you with revision control of your projects.
HMI/SCADA and Change Management WebCast on November 1
GE Fanuc and Control Engineering are hosting a webcast entitled "Change Management: The 'Undo' Button for HMI/SCADA Projects". This webcast will highlight the major advantages of incorporating change management functionality within an HMI/SCADA application.
The event will feature Craig Resnick of ARC Advisory Group and will be moderated by Renee Robbins, Editorial Director of Control Engineering.
Register now for this event, at www.controleng.com/changewebcast.
CIMPLICITY 7.0 can be integrated with our Portal product, providing you with the ability to analyze your current and historical data into meaningful information is critical to improving your operations. Enhancements have been made in CIMPLICITY 7.0 that now allow you to host Portal screens within your CIMPLICITY screens, or CIMPLICITY screens within your Portal screens. You now have even further insight into your operations than ever before.
Historian has been integrated in CIMPLICITY 7.0. When using historical trends in CIMPLICITY, Historian provides a significant performance enhancement over SQL, in many cases over a 10X increase in the speed for retrieving and charting the data. SQL is still supported and in fact we support logging to both SQL and Historian at the same time. This allows you to enhance your system at your own pace.
We have also enhanced the integration between CIMPLICITY and Machine Edition View by supporting the passing of array points between the products.
We’ve also made enhancements to OPC in Version 7.0. We now include the CIMPLICITY OPC Server at no charge. The OPC Server allows you to provide information that CIMPLICITY has gathered or generated out to other OPC capable systems. In addition to this we’ve added some features and enhancements to the OPC configuration and event handling.
Security has been improved with the ability to integrate with Change Management to limit who can make changes and track and roll back changes if required. In addition, we’ve added the ability to specify that a password must be entered to start or stop a project. Privileges for Privileges for Right Mouse Menu Actions and Password enhancements have also been added.
We’ve also improved our connectivity to the latest series of our CNC controllers.
CIMPLICITY 7.0 also adopts the common Proficy software licensing allowing one licensing method for all of your GE Fanuc software. Based on hardware keys, you will see several benefits including:
* Out of the box, up and running – With the hardware based keys you no longer have to call in to register your software. You can install your software and are immediately licensed to use it. No more reading off or typing in long hexadecimal authorization codes.
* Easily Updated – When you update your system in the future you will receive a new file that allows you to re-burn your key. You do not need to return your original key and wait for a replacement.
* Extreme High Reliability – The hardware keys are highly reliable and have a very low failure rate. When compared to the issues hard disk failures caused with software based licenses, hardware keys offer a huge improvement in reliability. To protect your system and your operations we have designed the CIMPLICITY software so that it will not shutdown should the hardware key fail or be accidentally removed from the system. In the rare case where a key is damaged or fails, simply call GE Fanuc and we will provide you with a temporary software key that allows your system to run until the damaged key can be returned or replaced.
* Freedom – Freedom to easily move your software license from one computer to another. With the new hardware keys you can easily move the license to the machine you want to use it on without having to call GE Fanuc to re-register your system. It’s your key, move it and use it as you like.
Make sure your GlobalCare contract is up to date and get ready for this new and exciting release of CIMPLICITY. Please contact your CIMPLICITY sales representative for further information.

Americas Go-To-Market Agreement Leverages Proven Capabilities to Transform Business Performance by Eliminating Barriers Between Enterprise and Production Management Systems
GE Fanuc has announced the completion of a sales and marketing agreement with SAP America, Inc., to jointly market GE Fanuc Production Management solutions and SAP® applications – easing plant floor and enterprise integration to increase quality, drive productivity, and enable success in key business initiatives such as Lean Six Sigma, regulatory compliance and efficiency.
This new relationship allows both companies to leverage each other’s strengths to meet the needs of customers in important Americas markets and in two key industries: Automotive and Mill Products. Other programs that fall under the agreement include the development of specialized professional services in order to support customers with planning, design, and implementation of the solutions.
“The ‘Perfect Order’ is not attainable without the bidirectional flow of crucial production information, such as production schedules, quality performance, inventory consumption and maintenance status,” said Tom Cruz, GE Fanuc Vice President of Software and Services. “By combining and jointly marketing GE Fanuc Production Management and SAP Adaptive Manufacturing solutions, our customers can overcome the barriers historically restricting contextual information flow between the plant floor and the enterprise – helping manufacturers transform their business through increased visibility and resulting responsiveness.”
The combination of GE Fanuc’s Production Management solutions with SAP’s Production Execution services allows for the gathering, analyzing and transforming of real-time data into information to continuously improve a company’s level of productivity and performance. The real-time visibility and intelligence facilitated by the combined solution translates into improved agility, quality and efficiency by tracking and executing production operations through a closed-loop information exchange with the SAP Business Suite.
“Connecting plant floor and business systems in a robust way is a critical business issue for manufacturers today because it is the only way to get the performance and responsiveness they need,” said Greg Gorbach, ARC Advisory Group’s Vice President of Collaborative Manufacturing Research. "The new GE Fanuc and SAP relationship allows manufacturers to implement a joint solution that synchronizes plant operations with the dynamics of the supply network to reduce waste, drive adherence to schedule, decrease product and production variability, and increase quality and productivity on a global basis."
“GE Fanuc has successfully implemented SAP-integrated Production Management software solutions, ranging from single-plant environments to diverse, multinational, global rollouts,” explained John Dyck, GE Fanuc Global Director of Production Management. “We have brought these solutions to major manufacturers in discrete, hybrid and process industries through hundreds of installations throughout the world. By working even more closely with SAP, we are helping manufacturers achieve the next level of business transformation.”
Traditionally, integration of production data and business systems has been limited to manual processes, or at best, automated transactions that were narrowly defined. By eliminating these barriers, the joint GE Fanuc and SAP solution will improve quality and throughput by identifying constraints in real-time, ensuring “right-first-time” production, managing production sequences, and limiting warranty and recall exposure. The solutions will provide product genealogy information traced by raw material consumption and production performance data. Additionally, they will drive operational efficiency and quality as well as the ability to respond quickly to manufacturing events and trends. These flexible, capable production systems will also meet the needs of companies that typically manufacture many variants of their products and require exceptional agility.omply with key regulatory requirements

Shelf Management RFID
The LibBestTM Shelf Management Solution makes locating and identifying items on the shelves an easy task for librarians. It comprises basically of a portable scanner and a base station.
The solution is designed to cover three main requirements:
* Search for individual books requested
* Inventory check of the whole library stock
* Search for books which are miss-helved
RFID EP
All these functions are performed by sweeping the portable scanner across the spines of the books on the shelves to gather their identities. In an inventory check situation, the identities collected are compared with the database and a discrepancy report could be generated.
In situations when search function is required, whether for a particular item or an item category, the information is first entered into the portable scanner from the base station, and when a foreign item is found on the shelves, a built-in beeper sound to alert the librarians.
KEY BENEFITS:
1. Changes inventory process:
* No more book handling: just pass the reader across shelved books to perform an instant inventory.
* Accuracy: book identification numbers are registered in the Shelf-Management Reader. The data is then downloaded to the central database.
* The fastest inventory you have ever made: 20 books per second.
* Notification: books to be pulled are up-loaded to the reader for quick identification.
2. User friendly:
* Light weight
* Wand allows easy reading of high and low shelves
3. Saves time and resources:
* Implementers indicate a 75% reduction in human resources required for shelf management activities.

Self Check in/out station
The Patron Self Check-out station is basically a computer with a touch screen and a built-in RFID reader, plus special software for personal identification, book and other media handling and circulation. After identifying the patron with a library ID card, a barcode card, or his personal ID number (PIN), the patron is asked to choose the next action (check-out of one or several books). After choosing check-out , the patron puts the book(s) in front of the screen on the RFID reader and the display will show the book title and its ID number (other optional information can be shown if desired) which have been checked out.
The patron then confirms that he has finished the check-out process and a receipt is printed, showing which books have been borrowed and the return date. The RFID tag in the book is set on quiet as a result no alarm will go off at the EAS gates.
It is also possible to use the station for Check-In (return) of books. In this case the patron identifies herself, chooses return and then puts one book or a stack of books onto the reader. She will receive a receipt. If the books were to be taken through the gate now, an alarm would sound.
One important point for library productivity is that the whole process is significantly less time consuming than with barcode and magnetic strip system; therefore long lines are avoided and fewer stations are needed for the same process.

RFID Transponder
An RFID tag is the most important link in any RFID system. It has the ability to store information relating to the specific item to which they are attached, rewrite again without any requirement for contact or line of sight. Data within a tag may provide identification for an item, proof of ownership, original storage location, loan status and history.
RFID Tag consists of an integrated circuit and an antenna combined to form a transponder. RFID tags collect the energy to operate from a Radio Frequency (RF) field emitted by a reader device; therefore they do not need a battery. When energized by a radio signal from a fixed position reader or handheld scanner, the tag returns the stored information in order that the item to which it is attached can be easily located.
The chip also has a "multi-read" function, which means that several tags can be read at once.
RFID tags have been specifically designed to be affixed into library media, including books, CDs, DVDs and tapes.
RFID Transponder
It is thin, flexible and thus can be laminated between paper and plastic. With special method to attach to books, patron is totally unaware that the tag is there.
KEY BENEFITS:
* No line of sight needed
* Allows to check-out and check-in several items simultaneously
* Information directly attached to product
* Performing both identification and antitheft in one single operation
* Different shape and sizes available
* Able to tag almost anything
* Accelerate scanning and identifying

RFID FOR LIBRARY
SIX SENTENCE About RFID FOR LIBRARY
1. RFID tags replace both the EM security strips and Barcode.
2. Simplify patron self check-out / check-in.
3. Ability to handle material without exception for video and audio tapes.
4. Radio Frequency anti-theft detection is innovative and safe.
5. High-speed inventory and identify items which are out of proper order.
6. Long-term development guarantee when using Open Standard.
RFID Technology for Libraries
1. RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is the latest technology to be used in library theft detection systems. Unlike EM (Electro-Mechanical) and RF (Radio Frequency) systems, which have been used in libraries for decades, RFID-based systems move beyond security to become tracking systems that combine security with more efficient tracking of materials throughout the library, including easier and faster charge and discharge, inventorying, and materials handling.
2. RFID is a combination of radio-frequency-based technology and microchip technology. The information contained on microchips in the tags affixed to library materials is read using radio frequency technology regardless of item orientation or alignment (i.e., the technology does not require line-of-sight or a fixed plane to read tags as do traditional theft detection systems) and distance from the item is not a critical factor except in the case of extra-wide exit gates. The corridors at the building exit(s) can be as wide as four feet because the tags can be read at a distance of up to two feet by each of two parallel exit sensors.
3. The targets used in RFID systems can replace both EM or RF theft detection targets and barcodes.
Advantages of RFID systems
Rapid check-out / check-in
The use of RFID reduces the amount of time required to perform circulation operations. The most significant time savings are attributable to the facts that information can be read from RFID tags much faster than from barcodes and that several items in a stack can be read at the same time. While initially unreliable, the anti-collision algorithm that allows an entire stack to be check-out or check-in now appears to be working well.
The other time savings realized by circulation staff are modest unless the RFID tags replace both the EM security strips or RF tags of older theft detection systems and the barcodes of the library management system - i.e., the system is a comprehensive RFID system that combines RFID security and the tracking of materials throughout the library; or it is a hybrid system that uses EM for security and RFID for tracking, but handles both simultaneously with a single piece of equipment. There can be as much as a 50 percent increase in throughput. The time savings are less for check-out than for check-in because the time required for check-out usually is extended by social interaction with patrons.
Simplified patron self check-out / check-in
For patrons using self check out, there is a marked improvement because they do not have to carefully place materials within a designated template and they can check out several items at the same time.
Patron self check-in shifts that work from staff to patrons. Staff is relieved further when readers are installed in book-drops.
High reliability
1. The readers are highly reliable. RFID library systems claim an almost 100 percent detection rate using RFID tags.
2. There is no false alarm than with older technologies once an RFID system is properly tuned.
3. RFID systems encode the circulation status on the RFID tag. This is done by designating a bit as the "theft" (EAS) bit and turning it off at time of check-out and on at time of check-in. If the material that has not been properly check-out is taken past the exit sensors, an immediate alarm is triggered.
High-speed inventorying
A unique advantage of RFID systems is their ability to scan books on the shelves without tipping them out or removing them. A hand-held inventory reader can be moved rapidly across a shelf of books to read all of the unique identification information. Using wireless technology, it is possible not only to update the inventory, but also to identify items which are out of proper order.
Automated materials handling
Another application of RFID technology is automated materials handling. This includes conveyer and sorting systems that can move library materials and sort them by category into separate bins or onto separate carts. This significantly reduces the amount of staff time required to ready materials for re-shelving.
Long tag life
Finally, RFID tags last longer than barcodes because nothing comes into contact with them. Most RFID vendors claim a minimum of 100,000 transactions before a tag may need to be replaced.

RFID for Beginners
RFID profession is utilised ofttimes today and has been around since the 1920s, but not some grouping undergo about, or wager it. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and is utilised to accumulation and regain information. This aggregation is stored and retrieved using RFID tags or transponders. RFID tags are diminutive and crapper be merged into some products. The tags hit antennas that earmark them to obtain and move to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver.
Two Types of RFID Tags
There are digit types of RFID tags; astir tags, and supine tags. Passive tags do not hit their possess noesis supply, but kinda obtain their noesis from a tiny electrical underway inform in the sensitiveness that is evoked by an inbound broadcasting oftenness scan. Because of the diminutive noesis inform in the system, supine RFID tags are utilised exclusive in brief distances (such as an ID card).
Active RFID tags hit a noesis maker and thence are such stronger and crapper be utilised over large distances and are thence more highly effective. Active RFID tags also hit the possibleness to accumulation more aggregation than their supine counterparts. Some astir RFID tags hit a shelling chronicle of up to decade years.
The System of RFID
RFID entireness soured of a grouping that relies on tags, attach readers, attach planning stations, operation equipment, circulation readers, and attach listing wands. RFID is mostly utilised in security, because section gates are programmed to feature the RFID tags and then either unstoppered or near accordingly. The grouping helps the aggregation be easily transmitted via an RFID device. Systems hit evolved over the eld along with RFID chips. The wish is that RFID module digit period be acquirable to everyone (meaning consumers) because it module be more economical and outlay trenchant to compel RFID processes.
Where is RFID Used?
RFID crapper be institute nearly everywhere. RFID crapper be institute in bookstores and CD stores. The lowercase signal that sounds if a CD has not been scanned is prefabricated doable by an RFID chip. RFID chips are institute on birdlike tags, on books in libraries, in automobile alarms and automobile hair systems. RFID crapper also be utilised to notice motion. This could be rattling multipurpose in the reaching eld in cost of prisons. In 2004 the river Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRH) authorised a $415,000 lessen to effort RFID profession in prisons. The intent is that the prisoners module article wristbands that module check their movement. If there is some movement, which is discover of the ordinary, section module be alerted. This profession module be engaged in some states in the reaching years.
Conclusion
RFID profession seems to hit long possibilities. Some critics of RFID profession feature that it violates the concealment of citizens. This is supported on the fact that RFID crapper be utilised to road whereabouts of grouping and obtain individualized information. Putting every of this noesis into a lowercase defect makes it undetectable. However, RFID crapper also mayhap be utilised in driver’s licenses for faster personnel scanners, and as a artefact to guardian infirmary patients. With every potentially bruising covering of RFID, there are individual wonderful applications. It module be engrossing to wager every of the wonderful applications of RFID in the future.

We must note that most of the PLC will not let us mix NPN and PNP devices on the module itself when using a sensor (photo-eye, prox, etc) that we do, but must be on their output care-configuration. Always check whether it is PNP or NPN. (Check with the manufacturer if it is safe)
The difference between the two is whether the load (in our case, the PLC is the load), activated from the ground or positive voltage. NPN has a sensor on the load on the ground, while a PNP device is switched on the load on the positive voltage.
diagram below is what lower than the output NPN and PNP sensors seem. (more…)
